Toby Carr: Softest Thunder

After the extraordinary success of Battle Cry, his duo album with mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston – recipient of both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine awards in 2023 – Toby Carr returns to Delphian with his debut solo recording, on which centuries of music meet in the intimate sound-world of the Renaissance lute.

Interweaving seventeenth-century English and French repertoire by Dowland, Robert Johnson, Robert Ballard and others with Carr’s own arrangements of Purcell, Eccles, Satie and Poulenc, the programme traces unexpected continuities of gesture, harmony and expression across four hundred years. At its centre is Blue, specially commissioned from guitarist and composer Laura Snowden, whose heightened, personal language responds to the rhetorical elegance of early lute music while exploring the instrument’s modern possibilities.

'Wielding a darkly sonorous 10-course Renaissance lute made in 2023 by Jiří Čepelák, Carr especially seizes upon the novelty and nostalgia inherent in Poulenc’s Sarabande or Satie’s Gnossiennes to echo the melancholy and wistfulness of Dowland’s Tarleton’s Resurrection or Johnson’s Pavan – an effect enhanced by Snowden’s lyrical, direct Blue coming between the latter two pieces.

Other juxtapositions are equally striking. By following Ballard’s mini-suite of short dances with Satie’s Gnossienne No 1 or the same composer’s Gymnopédie No 1 with Ennemond Gaultier’s Courante Son Adieu, the effect of defamiliarisation is intensified. Following Satie by Purcell and Eccles by Johnson – who ends the recital – is perhaps more subtle but equally effective.

Throughout, Carr adopts a beautifully flexible approach to interpretation while maintaining a sure sense of period style. Indeed, his artfully rendered lines, textures and timbres ensure a universalising ‘softest thunder’ rumbles beneath every work in this intelligently conceived and compellingly realised recital.'
