O Holy Night: A Merton Christmas

The Choir of Merton College joins forces with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra for a recording of director Benjamin Nicholas’s favourite carols. Two of John Rutter’s most exquisite works are complemented by orchestral versions of well-loved traditional fare. From the ecstatic brass fanfares that introduce O come, all ye faithful and Hark! the herald-angels sing to the intimate performances of Elizabeth Poston’s Jesus Christ the apple tree and Morten Lauridsen’s O magnum mysterium, Christmas old and new is celebrated with a fresh sense of all its magic and glory.

The choir and orchestra loved making this recording, and it shows.

"here are many vibrantly, energetic moment here…In many ways, though, the best singing comes in quieter moment: Elizabeth Poston’s Jesus Christ the apple tree, with the top line sweetly profiled by the Merton College Choir sopranos, is an obvious highlight."

"Beginning with jauntily orchestrated pieces by John Rutter, the sequence proceeds to the a cappella starkness of Elizabeth Poston’s exquisite Jesus Christ the Apple Tree; then comes the grandiosity of Mendelssohn’s Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, arranged by David Willcocks."

"Benjamin Nicholas’s Merton College choir are predictably excellent, a textbook example of a well-blended, very English choral sound."

"Throughout this disc Benjamin Nicholas and his superb choir are on top form"

"If you’re in the market for a superbly sung collection of festive favourites old and new, look no further than O Holy Night from the Choir of Merton College Oxford, who’ve established themselves as one of the finest mixed-voice Oxbridge choirs over the past decade or so"
